    Dilshad Burman – August 21st

I’m close to running a month behind! I promise to catch up soon!

August 21st was a Friday night that needed an outfit that could pull double duty between a semi-stylish house party and a retirement party for the hard partying dad of one of our closest friends. I wanted something with minimal fuss as I had NO TIME after work to be elaborate…

    From Style Per Diem

Excuse the quality of the picture. I think my mirror is filthy!

The jeans: Dark wash, low waist skinny jeans – the typical kind the kids are wearing these days!

The top: Loose fit, low neck, black tank top from H&M. It feels like it balances precariously on the top endge of the bra, but stays surprisingly in place. I love how loose and flowy it is and how it tightens into a wide waist band at the hip and very much love the little tucks at the neck line as well. I did not get a good picture of the back, but it has a little corss back detail between the shoulders which added a little something and took it one up from a basic black tank top for me.

The shoes: Killer black pointy toe stilletos. I call them killer because they’re not only super sexy, but hurt far too much for me to wear them more than 2-3 hours at a time. The house party required me to be barefoot and so I thought them a reasonable risk for this night. Must break them in though.

Accessories: I carried a black patent leather clutch that has the option of a chain strap, added a chunky kada or bracelet and intertwined my teal beads with the previously posted silver chain with baubles for a bit of colour. I think I went with basic silver hoops for ear-rings and some teal-blue smoky eye make up to finish off.

I liked the slight ‘rock chick’ edge this outfit had and I side swept my hair to add some glam factor. Judging by reactions it was quite successful and I managed to stay under-done too.

Very understated; I like it. I am finally giving in to skinny jeans too. The top is great, but I always get fidgety when I wear stuff like that because I worry whether something is showing. Not to mention having to think 10 times before bending even slightly. Great look though.

you do look so very rockstar chic. and the jeans look great!

      Thank you ladies!

@inopiate – I’m the same way. But there’s a point where I just give up and try my best to let go. There’s more than enough badly dressed people to take attention away from any potential wardrobe malfunctions. But again, this one stayed put. Also – flash tape or double sided tape actually does wonders, as loathed as I am to using it.

    • inopinate 6:12 am on September 15, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Tape, really? I’ve heard about it, but always thought people were kidding. I’ll have to try that.

    Before the summer ends.

    Summer is NOT over yet!

    Great sunshine and great weather.

I’ve been working weird hours lately so I am always awake in the morning. Becaues of that I went to meet up with a friend today and we hang out and enjoy the morning sunshine…(which I haven’t seen in such a long time)

I hate waking up early though but sometimes it feels great when waking up early because somehow the whole day feels longer.

It might be some last chances for me to wear leggings, tank top, and flip flops.

    • Tank top: Forever 21. Simple black and white cotton top.
    • Cardigan: Urban Outfitters. Not a pure white color though (didn’t know what it is) more like a beige color with black stripes.
    • Foot: Black flip flops today (took it off before the picture was taken)

In the evening, I converted this outfit into an outfit to work.

    • I don’t usually wear flip flops to work so I put on these grey boots instead. They are very comfortable and easy to wear. Not too much of attention and goes well with the denim jacket.

Where are your leggings from? I am on a leggings hunt.

I bought it in a store called “TNA” in Canada. I don’t know if you can find it else or not. They are sorta like lululemon material and you can cut the length by yourself. Very comfortable but not too thin so you can actually wear them like a tight pants style.

    Inopinate – September 9

For a semi-important work meeting on a semi-summer day, I chose this outfit.

    From Style Per Diem

Skirt: This mixed wool skirt in brown, muted yellow and all kinds of earth colors has a cool uneven hem. Depending on how adventurous I am feeling, I wear it short in the front and longer in the back (shown here), or have it fall asymmetrically from left to right. The mixed wool is light enough for fall/autumn.

Top: After many years, my long quest for the perfect dress shirt ended (kind of) at H&M a couple of weeks ago. The dress shirt is one of the most difficult items of clothing to get right. This white shirt has it all – almost. The top button is in the precise location it should be, allowing just the right opening at the neck. The construction has darts down the torso, front and back, which lend the perfect fit without bunching up. It even has the horizontal seam on the upper back without which I think a dress shirt is worthless. This superbly tailored masterpiece has rolled up sleeves with tab buttons to keep them in place. This casual, albeit stylish detail brings down the dress value of the shirt a notch. But all in all, a great find. I like the way it grounds the skirt in this outfit.

Shoes: Grey, faux patent leather (yes, hippies, rejoice) pointy pumps from the Nine West outlet. My intention with these is to replace the worn-out brown pumps from Chinese Laundry. These grey ones have a nice medium-low heel that works well for me.

    Accessories: Nothing special.

Thanks! We are still in the process of setting it up, but it’s good to know that it doesn’t look like a complete mess.

    • inopinate 5:30 pm on September 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

It’s similar to what I’ve had (I’m assuming you’ve seen the latest on Facebook), with small changes in the cut. Ever since I went short I just let it keep evolving rather than stick to the exact same look.

    Inopinate – September 7

A 2.5 mile cable car ride up a desert mountain was the perfect way to end a relaxing weekend getaway. It also meant that I needed to dress for a transition from 104 F to 69 F in 8 minutes.

    From Style Per Diem

Shorts: Overposted khaki walking shorts. They don’t lose their charm, no matter how often I wear them.

Top: This black top from Old Navy was love at first sight. I had the salesperson strip the mannequin to give me the last XS piece. I still had to cut an inch off the neckline from either side and sew up the cuts by hand to make the top fit, but it was all worth it in the end. I simply adore the woven detail on the neck, which reminds me of intricate henna patterns that seduce you with just the right balance of scarlet and skin. The elasticized bottom adds to the breezy-yet-stylish look. I have worn this top by day and by night, and it always delivers without fuss. I pulled my black sweater over this ensemble when we reached the top altitude of 10,000 feet, and it worked just fine.

Shoes: Silver snakeskin ballet flats, also overposted. I found a whole new appreciation for these shoes in the dry desert heat. The silver outer surface reflects most of the heat and light back into the air, keeping feet nice and cool. Can your gladiators do that

Accessories: Turquoise earrings, straw hat, and nothing else worth mentioning.

    Dilshad Burman – August 18

This work day allowed for decent dressing and I wanted something effortless yet smart. I defaulted to my jeans and white t-shirt combo, with a few neat details.

    From Style Per Diem

The jeans: Medium wash, mid rise, slightly flared relaxed fit jeans, long enough to require a slight heel.

The top: Extremely hard to come by, absolutely simple, round neck, cap sleeve white t-shirt. I like that it does not have a ribbed neck like most crew t-shirts, but a simple hemmed neck and its a nice long length, good for both tucking in or leaving out.

The vest: I think this grey three button vest/waist coat featured in one of my very first contributions to this page. Still love it for the structure it lends to any simple t-shirt and love the racer back shape at the back.

The shoes: MUCH adored teal wedges. BEST shoe investment of the summer, by far!

Accessories: Did not have time to fuss, so left in all the usual silver and threw on this over sized blue fabric flower brooch from H&M. I love how large it is and how its a simple POP of colour and femininity on an otherwise plain outfit.

Several compliments on the smartness of the over all look and the lean gait afforded by the heels convinced me this was a winning combination.

I bought this at Costa Blanca last summer I think. I’m not sure if they retail in the US but I find their clothes fit me really well and often strike a decent balance between trends and classic styles. I shop there a LOT.

    • inopinate 10:14 pm on September 10, 2009 Permalink | Reply

No Costa Blanca in the US. Looks like it’s Canada only. You guys seem to have all the good stores.

    Dilshad Burman – August 14

I realise I’ve been absent for a while, but I have been dutifully taking pictures of my outfits, to post as and when my suddenly hectic schedule allows!

This is a simple outfit, chosen for comfort and possibilities of belt- loosening at a Korean Barbeque night which is always sure to involve much over eating!

    From Style Per Diem

The dress: Simple beige safari type shirt dress with a self fabric sash. Previously posted in the beginning of a dismal summer worn with black tights and a woven leather belt. I chose to wear it in its orginal form about 2 weeks ago for a big dinner, when it was beautiful and warm out – so much so that I didn’t even need to carry a sweater for later.

The sandals: Previously posted much loved two tone satin sandals from the unique chappal walla uncle on Hill Road, Bombay.

Accessories: I left all the usual silver in and added a somewhat chunky, wooden bead, multi-strand turquoise necklace for fun.

A simple and very quick throw-on and go outfit for an extremely casual Friday night dinner with the usual suspects. Much laughter, much burnt meat, much hair smelling like barbequed pork! whee!

    Inopinate – September 1

I was attending a Microsoft demo this evening in their swanky downtown office. Because it was an after-hours event for designers, there was no dress code. So I chose to look like a laid-back professional.

    From Style Per Diem

Skirt: There has been a lot of stuff coming up in the stores that requires tucking in the top. I intentionally stay behind trends that I don’t think will last, such as high rise bottoms, jump suits (say it isn’t so!), harem pants etc. But it looks like this one is taking after all, so I finally bought this high rise skirt from H&M last weekend on trial basis. It is an off-white cotton A-line skirt with side pockets and self-colored buttons along the pockets. The rise is very high – almost up to the navel, which makes it very tight on the tummy sitting down. I don’t think I am going to take high rise out of trial mode anytime soon. Nonetheless, the look is very flattering on narrow frames.

Top: Previously shown racerback top from Forever 21. Although very transparent in the daytime, it drops to an acceptable level of sheer in the evening.

Shoes: Brown Chinese Laundry pumps shown before.

Accessories: I was in a mood to experiment, so I threw on two different necklaces together. The turquoise one is a Kokommo piece that brings some much-needed color to the outfit, and has a gold-tone chain. I pulled this one up high so it sat right at the collar bone. The second necklace has three charms on a silver chain, one of which is an amethyst. I let this one hang lower than the other one. While the turquoise one pretty much stayed put, the charms had a lot of movement, creating visual interest and nice asymmetry. Other than that, all I had on was the chronograph and my ginormous blue bag.

You look stunning! I love the put together, looks professional but not boring at all. It is a very great look on you. Especially the shoes, I am a sucker for pointy shoes and it just looks so nice all together. Love it!

Love love LOVE the skirt! I’m all for the high rise look – elongates the leg on short people like me and shows off a tiny waist. :)
The whole look is just lovely!
