    Dilshad Burman – October 17

It was Diwali day but I had so many work commitments and social engagements, we decided to celebrate properly the next day. This day, we had to go see a new baby boy in the morning, the newly born brother of my favouritest baby boy ever. In my effort to carry forward some summer clothes into fall, I put together this outfit for a brilliant, bright and fairly warm fall day…

    From Style Per Diem

The skirt: This is the previously posted birthday skirt – a beautiful, A line, printed flouncy, girly thing! I wore it with light grey wool blend leggings, although in the picture they look dark.

The top: I layered a white cotton V neck sweater with a beige cami with lace detailing at the neck and hem. I did a beige cami instead of a white one because I wanted a clean, not-so-busy look up top, but still maintain SOME visual interest. I tucked it in because I like the look of a high waisted skirt with a top tucked in and threw on the grey jacket for warmth and pizazz!

The shoes: I wish I had slate or grey boots for this, I would have even settled for a nice tan, but alas, although I found them, they were unavailable in elf sizes. So Hush Puppies it was!

Accessories: I wore some simple, thin silver hoops and added this GORGEOUS belt that I found at H&M that just happened to be the same colour as the self coloured sash this skirt came with. I didn’t know that at the time I bought it – it just all worked out so nicely. I avoided any chains or neclaces because babies tend to like grabbing on to them.

CAUTION: If you are going to buy an elasticated belt such as this one, make sure you buy it to fit the widest area you plan to wear it on, without it HURTING.  This one began to hurt because it is NARROWER than where I was wearing it. I can wear it comfortably on my natural waist and ribs, but my hips are wider and it landed up being not-so-comfy after a bit. I tried to buy a size up later but they ran out. DO NOT choose style over comfort. If you have no padding in that area like me, the extra squeezing can seriously damage your innards!

All in all, I felt this outfit looked a wee bit on the cow girl side, but I enoyed it thoroughly and cant wait to wear it again for a longer, fuller day. It was perfect to run around the house with a 1.5 yr old – lots of room to MOVE with no fear of flashing- and appropriate for the occasion.

I love tights with skirts. And you’re inspiring me to build a collection of camis.

Give me a minute to wipe the drool off my keyboard; I was merely lusting after that belt. H&M, eh? What section?

    • shaks 10:32 am on November 18, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Love the Belt, they dont do justice to my figure though. Where is the grey jacket from??

    • weewoman 8:30 pm on November 18, 2009 Permalink | Reply

@ET- I buy one anytime I see one I like. You can never have enough and you always need something to layer….around here anyway!

@inopiate- No particular section really…it was on a display table on the lowest floor that carries the slightly older women’s clothing – not the hipster section…I wanted it in grey and would have gotten the only one off the mannequin, but I figured I’d try this colour instead…

@Shaks- The grey cardigan is from one of my favourite stores here – Costa Blanca. I shop there a lot because they always seem to have what I’m looking for when I am looking for it, its affordable, and their styling suits my life right now…

Wait… this one’s not grey? *Confused*

    • weewoman 8:54 am on November 19, 2009 Permalink | Reply

No, its a very very pale green, which is why it blends in with the skirt so well. The grey one was a darker shade of grey.

They had one left, and it was an L. Grr. But you know what I did chance upon at DSW – those tasty T-strap ruffles. Will debut soon.

    Dilshad Burman – October 14

I had to dress casual-yet-smart for this day at work…

    From Style Per Diem

The jeans: Medium wash, relaxed fit, boot cut jeans with flap pockets. A nice flattering fit I think.

The sweater: I have been looking for sweaters that are NOT V-Necks or turtle necks for a while and for whatever reason they are darned near impossible to find. Naturally, when I found this teal scoop necked wonder, I was overjoyed, not only because it fulfilled the not-V-neck-or-turtle-neck criteria, but because the neck was actually high enough not to necessitate a cami or tank underneath. It has an exaggerated ribbed cuff with buttons down the side of said cuff and a close, but comfortable fit.

The jacket: Previously posted quarter sleeved, single button linen blazer with a portrait collar. I like the structure it adds to an otherwise simple outfit and it seems to lock and load everything when buttoned up. The short length also helps to break up a long, single coloured sweater.

The shoes: My hush puppies will be a constant for the next few posts!

Accessories: I left in the usual silver and added this multi-strand oxidised silver chain for multi-layered fun!

This outfit was simple and comfortable enough to be hassle free, but smart enough to remain poised and confident all day. (Why did that sound like a feminine product commercial?)

V-necks with angled shoulder seems. UGH. Dressing well in winter takes SO bloody much of effort, I just give up. This is a great look. Try with slate/stone colored jeans.

    Dilshad Burman – October 12

I dont remember exactly what I was up to on this day, but I chose to take my chunky over-sized grey sweater coat for another spin…

    From Style Per Diem

The jeans: Extra dark slim fit jeans from one of those teeny-bopper stores because they’re the only one’s that carry double zero’s. Also, apart from my skinny’s these are perfect for tucking into boots.

The top: It looks blue in this picture, but the tank top is actually a nice bright purple, that I layered under a tight black cotton sweater – it was not cold enough for wool yet. I threw on the grey sweater coat, which almost has a kimono like effect and belted it with a thick black faux leather belt. I’m really enjoying the over sized and belted look this season.

The shoes: Reliable, go with everything black hush puppies.

Accessories: Aside from the black belt, nothing notable. My hair looked amazing though!

This outfit was nice for a fall day when they had not quite turned the heat up all the way in the building yet. Warm and cozy, but not uncomfortably stuffy. Someone commented on how I was possibly the only person that still looked miniscule in a thick chunky sweater. I agreed and thanked them.

This blog has made me think about what I wear a little more. Thanks to Nidhi and Ella, I wear my skinny jeans more and consciously buying longer tops to go with them. G has made me aware that I veer towards solids, so I pointedly look at prints when curating for Swasta Ani Masta and my wardrobe. This outfit stretches my comfort zone without yanking me out of it.
There was a cyclone warning today which gave me the excuse to bring out the rain boots.

Top: I’ve been buying a lot of purple lately. This print seems familiar. Sari, do you have something like this? The top is from Fashion Street for Rs 100, and the camisole inside is from Colaba Causeway for the same price.

    Pants: Free Victoria Beckham skinnies.

Boots: Gumboots from childhood idol KK.

Accessories: Hoops that Dot aptly christened folk puppet earrings, three silver bangles and a Titan watch.

Since humidity was high, I wore my hair curly. This outfit made me feel pretty and feminine as opposed to stuck-up and snooty. It was windy and chilly outside, so I came back in to put on a scarf and a jacket.

    DSC05211

Jacket: Bought for the colour and design. I’m building some closet essentials (more on that later) and this jacket was a step in the direction. Rs 2000, Kalapi on Colaba Causeway.

    DSC05240

Scarf: The first of my fake Pashmina stoles, bought at an exhibition in 2001 for my birthday. It’s by far my favourite because of the colour, but more so because of an incident. I was wearing this over a white shirt on the rare days I dressed up and standing at the bus-stop with a college friend-cum-colleague-roommate. And she said, “You know, you have a distinctive style.” And I thought, really? I do? And brief introspection lead to the revelation that I liked clothes.
By the end of 2002, coloured stoles were flooding the market.

Hair: The humidity was abnormally high, due to the cyclone in the Arabian Sea, so I had perfect little ringlets.

    DSC05220

I used a tail comb to make a perfect parting. I should use the comb more.

    DSC05225

Edit: Sraikh, that’s the double-chin I was talking about.

I love the jacket…lovely color. I’ve been giving all sorts of hints to my husband about this Jacket that I like :P
I’m a big fan of scarves too…I never buy scarves here though ..always in India. I like the very desi ethnic looking types….proud to say that I’ve managed to start a trend in the office too!

PinkSquirrel, my hair is temperamental and curls when humidity is high. When I want to wear it curly, I don’t comb it and sit near the window in the train. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
G, I’d like hair like that too. It’s a one-off, as you can tell from the rest of my pictures.

It’s never cold here. On this day. there was a cyclone warning that’s why the humidity was high and my hair looked great. I covet sweater dresses and trench coats and boots and stockings and chunky scarves. Le sigh.

There’s a slight nip in the air, which means I can bring out my “winter” clothes.

Top: Silk Batik kurta from Kalapi on Colaba Causeway. It’s nearly seven years old and I wear it sparingly because it has the best fit — despite being tight, it makes me look slim.

Jeans: Levis Sykes in slim straight with yellow tabs.

Shoes: I’d normally wear sandals or kolhapuris with a kurta but the weather was a little damp and hadn’t worn the Clarks Oxfords for a while.

Accessories: Silver pirate hoops, stiff hobo, three silver bangles, Titan watch and curly hair.

    DSC05238

Jacket: Later, a colleague returned this jacket. It’s my father’s raw silk Nehru jacket with plaid lining. In the ’80s, my dad updated it by adding a white zipper, an elastic at the bottom and moving the pockets north. Good job, dad. I’m keeping it.

    Shirt: Vero Moda chaddi shirt
Crushed tank: From Anokhi. Fuck pattern, I’m driven by colour and texture. The problem is, it’s too clingy and short to wear as is and I need to layer it in new ways to get the most out of it
Pants: Trusty perfect trousers from Cotton World. I think these will last another year at the most, after which I will have to get them replicated.
Shoes: Reliable Mary Janes from Mancini in Tel Aviv.
Accessories: Long silver chain with Tibetan charm, small topaz dots suspended from silver hook, woven leather belt and stiff hobo.

Look, I’m Catalogue Happy! I am Breezily dressed for Important yet Breezy business about the City. Need to work on elongating the torso line.

Tunic: From Anokhi for Rs 1050. I’m an Anokhi and Kilol loyalist for Indian wear. This one is from their new limited edition line which has more modern silhouettes and richer colours.

Churidaar: I suspect that the tunic is supposed to be worn with jeans or tights, but I love the cotton stretch churidaar (Rs 460) this shop called Nice Looks near my place stocks. It’s single-handedly responsible for me wearing Indian wear more. I also like contrasting as opposed to matching the kurta.

Chappals: Trusty buckled chaps from Hill Road (Rs 150, I think)

Accessories: The puppet earrings from below and three silver bangles.

In hindsight, this shape does nothing for me but I got a lot of compliments. Those dark spots on the churidaar are made by a wet nose

Actually, I think the shape is fine, and the length is just perfect. Like Nidhi said, a slightly deeper neckline would be ideal. Preferably a V-neck. And I would suggest cutting off the sleeve length a lot if you want to make it more flattering. But overall, the silhouette is great on you. Love the colors.

F, I bought a pair of skinnies from Dorothy Perkins last month. They fit perfectly well and are comfy as they have the much needed stretch that a lot of skinnies out there in the market dont and they are cheap at £22.
Oh I also have my eyes on ultra skinnies in Top shop, they are a tad pricier at £40 but again the lovely stretch fabric is worth every penny. My previous pair of TS jeans have stood the test of time and aged well.
If you are still struggling to find one, I shall pop over to yours and we can go shopping. ;)

My favorite affordable option is H&M and I am guessing topshop as well but I don’t have that here. GAP also recently launched some great skinnies and I tried them…they fit snug and comfortable and look pricy too. My only problem was the ankle wasn’t tight enough but with boots that should be ok. “inopinate” scored a great pair off of gilt.com recently I can send you an invite but I am not sure where they deliver. also, I would consider myself sort of curvy in shape…I have the hip thing going :)

The dress: I had been looking for a stretch sweater dress for the last couple of years.

Finally, my prayers were answered when VS came out with their Fall 2009 collection. It fits perfectly on the bust, waist and hips. The boxed pleats are my favorite part. They can make any fabric look formal. This thick 100% cottonrib turtleneck dress didn’t need an overcoat in 50 F weather and I get cold very easy.

The cardigan: I’ve had this must-have-no-lint black cardigan since 2003 I think. Got it at Ross for about 13-20 USD. The quality has lasted through many washer dryer cycles.

The shoes: Have not found a good pair of gray shoes, not sure if I would wear gray on gray. Anyhow, Clarks calls these the “bendables”. Rightly so. My most comfortable pair of black shoes.

I don’t think I own a single piece of casual clothing in this gray. I do, however, love this shade of gray for work.

    October 31 – 2008!!

After a week of 12-14 hour days and little to no sleep, my body finally gave up on me on Halloween itself and I am down with a nasty flu. So, I did not have a chance to dress up and have a costume this year. I was SUPREMELY disappointed because I LOVE Halloween, so I thought I’d share last years costume – I never did get to have enough fun with it, so I might just recycle it for next year…

    From Style Per Diem

The Costume: I dont remember exactly how I came up with this costume, but once I had the idea, I knew exactly how I wanted to put it together. I searched high and low for a tube dress and finally landed up buying 2 brown tank tops, believing one would not be enough to cover everything, and I’d chop up the second one for the lower half. However, thanks to the extra-long tank top trend, one sufficed quite nicely. I went to my regular t-shirt printing store (Yes I have a regular t-shirt printing store!) and had them print ‘Tootsie Roll’ on the tank top in the right font. I then went to my now regular fabric store (back then it wasn’t!) and bought some shiny white trim- its kind of like very broad, thick ribbon.
Now please remember, this is all well before http://www.sewwot.wordpress.com was even a twinkle in my eye.

I proceeded to ruffle up the trim and attached it to the bottom as a frill and the top as a flouncy collar, both front and back. It served as the white paper part on a tootsie roll wrapper. I had some extra left so I made a little wrist band with a bow on it…to add to some sort of 50′s ‘tootsie’ look or something!

Now the red stripes! Thanks to my work I have acces to all sizes, shapes and colours of gaff and electrical tape. So I grabbed a roll of red electrical tape, put on the costume and then taped on red stripes! C’mon, its a costume! It doesn’t have to last beyond the night!

I curled my hair in tight curls, threw on black tights to keep the cold out and if I remember correctly, I wore my red wedges!

And taadaa! TOOTSIE ROLL! Still my most favourite costume ever. I swear I will wear it again next year!
