    Spring sprung

As spring slowly set in last month I finally had the chance to trot out my self made plaid skirt.
As much as I tried to stay away from the Catholic school girl look, I only half succeeded.

    From Style Per Diem

The Skirt: I saw a skirt at H&M last summer in a nice crisp cotton, but by the time I got around to making it, it was fall. So I bought a nice plaid suiting fabric and recreated the box pleated skirt. I only got around to wearing it this spring. I added a few details of my own including a satin lining and a peek-a-boo lace trim on the lining hem. I paired the brown/grey skirt with dark brown leggings that don’t show up very well in this photo. Full details and PROOF that I made this skirt myself on http://www.sewwot.wordpress.com.

The top and sweater: The top is a simple white shirt with slight rouching at the bust – one of the few fitted shirts I have. The grey sweater is a basic piece I am so glad I invested in. I wore it, not just because the weather demanded, but because my edit bay is usually colder than it is outside, even in WINTER! I think it was the nail in the coffin of the ‘school girl’ situation.

Shoes: H&M has been my mind reading saviour for the past few months and when I went looking for basic, black low heeled pumps, I found this gorgeous matte pair with tiny brass studs around the heel that were just perfect. I’ll post a better picture soon.

Accessories: I left in all the basic silver and added a  short vintage string of black glass beads. If you look very carefully, the plaid has a thin line of bright blue woven in and I threw on this ring to make it pop. I also added a thin black belt on the high waist for more definition.

I like how this outfit came together. I’ve done many skirt-shirt-stockings combos since and I’m very pleased with that particular look of late.

Hehe, Thanks! But just you wait till you see what else I have planned for this fabric!! I have some left and am gonna make an even sexier librarian skirt! :D

Does this have wool content? Is it heavy? Send some with Ma na. I need enough for at least two skirts. I

    • weewoman 7:04 am on April 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Nope, no wool content and not very heavy. Just basic suiting fabric – some sort of poly blend. Trust me, you can get much better stuff back home. It kills me every time I buy fabric here because it probably costs 1/10th the price back home!!

I’ve looked here, and not found anything I like. I want something with a wool, like this nice Loft skirt I had. It fell beautifully.

Shirt: Dunno. Colaba Causeway (Rs 150). It was mul with shell buttons and rounded edges.
Jeans: VB Skinnies (free), three years old.
Chaps: Steve Zissou kolhapuris from Causeway.
Accessories: Casio G-Shock watch and silver-tiered filgree ball earrings.

This the classic blue and white in a new silhoutte. I took a cab to work that day, which means no humidity and the result is shiny hair that sits down. Swimming makes me red.

I wish there was more mul in the local market. We seem to be exporting it all.

Top: By Zara, found on Colaba Causeway (Rs 200). What can I say? I was looking for a new length; it was green. Our fate was sealed.
Tights: Anthropolgie (Rs 280), facilitated by the lovely Ketaki. I wanted stirrup tights and these looked sunflower yellow on the website. I’m not disappointed by the ochre though, because they are easier to co-ordinate. I love these because they have no seams and look like they have been painted on.

Shoes: Golf, found at Eilat. Cost: NIS 123. I don’t champion ballet flats because I need them to be just so. The curve of the toe has to be perfect, as the depth of the cut inside, showing the right amount of toe cleavage. And then the material… These are perfect and I wear them when I need to look dressed up without wearing heels.
    Accessories: Seiko watch

The stance is of a person who has surrendered to her hair.

The pose is very editorial – love it. Hair – did you brush/comb it by any chance?

      • Educated Tatya 9:44 pm on April 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

And mess up the do? I get curls by not combing my hair after a shower. However, this is a result of being indoors and outdoors periodically during the day.

Dress: From Colaba Causeway (Must have been Rs 250 or so. I remember thinking it was a LOT!)
Bundi: My mother’s, from the 80s.
    Shoes: Summer sandals from Bandra
Accessories: Casio G shock watch (I love a practical watch), three bangles — turquoise, wood and shell and brass, and moonstone earrings.

I got out of bed and wanted to wear something minimal and colourful. I’ve worn almost ever summer dress I have in the past week and then remembered this one. I got it six or seven years ago from Colaba Causeway and have only worn it as a skirt. It’s got a subtle A-line cut and a mid-calf length. Feeling brave, I pulled it up like I was supposed to and added colour with my mother’s cropped waistcoat. I wear an awful lot of dull greens. I have never worn anything ruched and am surprised by how nice it can look.
I think it’s the hair. Curly lets you get away with anything.

It’s embroidery. And about 30 years old. I don’t know where my mother got it from.

Dress: TopShop for £35. Bought at Fashion Street for Rs 200.
Sandals: Bought from Bandra, probably 200 bucks, I’m wearing these every day this summer and then throwing them away.
Accessories: Husband’s Panerai Marina Militaire homage watch, silver hoops and three kadas in my right hand — a solid silver one from Amrapalli, a wooden one with brass inlay and a lac one with mother-of-pearl chips.

I love the conflict in this dress. Though I love a floral upholstery pattern, this one is too dull, too A to Z Dadar-East or Bombay Dyeing bedsheet for me. But look at the silhouette! It’s baggy, without being shapeless, airy with a fantastic back and rounded ending. And it has POCKETS! My only problem was with appropriate inner wear, which I solved by wearing a cross-back spaghetti.
This is going to be my summer uniform.

    Elongating it

    DSC05636

Tights: From Israel. It’s cotton made to look like leather. These are my “adult” tights. I’ve been looking for a pair that made it worth the risk of looking like I’m in my early 20s, or am going to the gym.

Shirt: This one is from Zara. I almost bought one from an outlet, but looked at the ‘Made in’ tag and put it back on the rack. Then I came back to India and found two on Colaba Causeway.

    Sandals: From Bandra.

Accessories: Sequins on a string from Bandra, Jimmy Choo across the body bag from Dharavi (Yes, they are made here) and RayBan aviators in silver and rose. In keeping with the 90s, I wore a watch with a big dial (Back in the day, we wore gigantic Swatches with changeable straps). It’s a Panerai Marina Militaire homage piece.

After choosing clothes based only on two criteria 1) Do I care if bleach falls spills on it? 2) Will my ass crack show when I bend?, I’m finally getting back into the groove of daily office wear. I’m trying to embrace a leaner and longer silhouette. So I’ve been looking for long, loose shirts, especially those that end in a curve.
I haven’t got the hang of the correct lengths yet, but I was happy with this one.
That’s the modelling pose I call “Looking if I dropped something while clenching my butt”. I have a great past on the ramp.

Yeah, I took the hair off my neck and kept it long in the front. Think I’m undergoing hormonal changes. Hair is staying curly. Yay!
