Dilshad Burman – One last stand…

November in Toronto has not been snowless in over 30 years. Although it was a bit nippy on this day, I could still get away with early fall wear. Not too much longer though…so I decided to see the last of the season out in style…

    From Style Per Diem

The skirt: Previously posted perfect, tweedy cotton grey pencil skirt with hip flattering rouching – worn last for our 2 yr anniversary dinner. I layered with grey wool blend tights which were surprisingly warm and cozy.

The sweater: NOTE: This sweater is NOT blue. Its this gorgeous bright purple colour that somehow reads blue on my point and shoot camera and I cannot get it to do any better. If I succeed, I will re-post a picture of just the sweater.

This outfit was built around this lovely sweater, purchased at a brilliant 50% sale from my favourite store – Costa Blanca. It is a very different silhouette than what I am used to, clinging tightly to the hips and loose on the top with a wide boat neck and fall away sleeves that cuff just above the elbow – almost built for a high waisted pencil skirt. Here’s a closer look at the sleeve and how I wore it. I enjoyed it very much because a) it is a sweater which meant I did not have to layer up and feel all constrained to feel warm, b) I am trying to diversify the shapes I choose and this one is unique and c) it is effortlessly chic, which is great in what is otherwise a simple single colour sweater.

The shoes: An absolute STEAL at Payless, these lovely ruffled T-straps that I bought this summer are as versatile as they are comfy. Much loved, under used!

Accessories: Even though the top was a blank canvas, I wanted to dress it up without over powering it. This acrylic/glass bead necklace with chain in between beads works well, but I think I might go on a hunt for similar necklaces soon. I also added a think black belt below my natural waist and the waist of the skirt, just for interest. Other than that I just left in the usual silver hoops and rings.

I absolutely LOVED this outfit for an exceptionally warm November Friday and I thoroughly enjoyed putting together several simple, effortless pieces into a workable ensemble.

Oh I love this outfit. So chic — the skirt and the silhouette of the blouse. I need to put a favourite icon here. And I thought the blue looked pretty amazing. Bit disappointed that it’s purple.

    Dilshad Burman – November 5

With fall in full effect I needed layers for warmth. However simply piling on random layers adds to bulk and discomfort. I tried to do it with a bit of flair..

    From Style Per Diem

The jeans: I have had these faded blue, almost grey straight fit jeans for ages – when I first discovered stores in Bombay that sold Taiwanese and Chinese merchandise that actually fit me! I had pretty much retired them because I prefer dark washes these days but all my other jeans were too dark for the sweater I wanted to wear and hence they were called back in to service.  They’re just simple cotton stretch 5 pocket jeans in a slim, almost skinny cut.

The sweater: I saw this over sized, dark teal, V neck, shapeless sweater dress at H&M and just instantly loved it, for no apparent reason. I waited and waited and when I could wait no more I bought it at full price, only for it to go on a ‘buy one get one free’ sale a few weeks later. GARGH.
I love the colour and I think it offers a number of different ways to layer and style it. I opted for a simple black tank underneath.

The blazer: Previously posted well fitted, unfortunately quarter sleeved blazer. I felt like the outfit needed some structure and another layer and this time the quarter sleeves were a nice touch. I folded them a bit and scrunched up the sweater sleeves against them for a rebellious “I don’t conform to your jacket rules” look.

    The shoes: HUSH PUPPIES ZINDABAAD!

Accessories: The usual silver, thin hoop ear rings and a very simple, almost manly black belt. other belts pulled too much focus and clashed with the jacket. I also did a very strong red lip and shimmery silver eyeshadow with some smudged dark blue pencil liner underneath.

All in all I felt pretty rock star-ish in this ensemble and I think it came together rather nicely. It was also quite warm and comfy cozy.

Very nicely put together. And you’ll be able to work that sweater in warmer weather too, so full price is still OK!

Love the sweater dress and red lipstick. I WANT A WINTER DAMMIT.

    Dilshad Burman – Diwali!

So I celebrated Diwali on October 18th, a day late, by having my friends over for dinner, a tradition I established in second year college. So like, 3 years ago. I didn’t get NEARLY as dressed up as we used to when we were younger, but it gave me a chance to wear a kurta I have been hoarding since the summer..

    From Style Per Diem

The kurta-churidaar: This kurta and churidaar was sent to me in a birthday summer package, courtesy ET. She also suggested that I wear it together in this combination, rather than with a white churidaar. I know the kurta is a bit loose but I ADORE it this way. I LOVE the print and the empire waist. The bell, puffed quarter sleeves were perfect for an evening of playing chef/hostess and the length is just right. Bright pink curidaars added a big pop of colour and made the outfit interesting.

The chappals: Much adored gold and copper kohlapuri’s – also courtesy a summer package from home.

Accessories: I kept it classic and unobstrusive. I wore my gold chain with a furohar pendant, my teeny gold ear-rings and some dull gold bangles.

If it were summer, I would have run around trees in the park in this outfit. Since it wasn’t, this was perfect for an evening spent indoors with a huge meal and good friends and phuljhadi’s (sparklers) on the balcony! :D

    Dilshad Burman – October 17

It was Diwali day but I had so many work commitments and social engagements, we decided to celebrate properly the next day. This day, we had to go see a new baby boy in the morning, the newly born brother of my favouritest baby boy ever. In my effort to carry forward some summer clothes into fall, I put together this outfit for a brilliant, bright and fairly warm fall day…

    From Style Per Diem

The skirt: This is the previously posted birthday skirt – a beautiful, A line, printed flouncy, girly thing! I wore it with light grey wool blend leggings, although in the picture they look dark.

The top: I layered a white cotton V neck sweater with a beige cami with lace detailing at the neck and hem. I did a beige cami instead of a white one because I wanted a clean, not-so-busy look up top, but still maintain SOME visual interest. I tucked it in because I like the look of a high waisted skirt with a top tucked in and threw on the grey jacket for warmth and pizazz!

The shoes: I wish I had slate or grey boots for this, I would have even settled for a nice tan, but alas, although I found them, they were unavailable in elf sizes. So Hush Puppies it was!

Accessories: I wore some simple, thin silver hoops and added this GORGEOUS belt that I found at H&M that just happened to be the same colour as the self coloured sash this skirt came with. I didn’t know that at the time I bought it – it just all worked out so nicely. I avoided any chains or neclaces because babies tend to like grabbing on to them.

CAUTION: If you are going to buy an elasticated belt such as this one, make sure you buy it to fit the widest area you plan to wear it on, without it HURTING.  This one began to hurt because it is NARROWER than where I was wearing it. I can wear it comfortably on my natural waist and ribs, but my hips are wider and it landed up being not-so-comfy after a bit. I tried to buy a size up later but they ran out. DO NOT choose style over comfort. If you have no padding in that area like me, the extra squeezing can seriously damage your innards!

All in all, I felt this outfit looked a wee bit on the cow girl side, but I enoyed it thoroughly and cant wait to wear it again for a longer, fuller day. It was perfect to run around the house with a 1.5 yr old – lots of room to MOVE with no fear of flashing- and appropriate for the occasion.

Give me a minute to wipe the drool off my keyboard; I was merely lusting after that belt. H&M, eh? What section?

    • shaks 10:32 am on November 18, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Love the Belt, they dont do justice to my figure though. Where is the grey jacket from??

    • weewoman 8:30 pm on November 18, 2009 Permalink | Reply

@ET- I buy one anytime I see one I like. You can never have enough and you always need something to layer….around here anyway!

@inopiate- No particular section really…it was on a display table on the lowest floor that carries the slightly older women’s clothing – not the hipster section…I wanted it in grey and would have gotten the only one off the mannequin, but I figured I’d try this colour instead…

@Shaks- The grey cardigan is from one of my favourite stores here – Costa Blanca. I shop there a lot because they always seem to have what I’m looking for when I am looking for it, its affordable, and their styling suits my life right now…

Wait… this one’s not grey? *Confused*

    • weewoman 8:54 am on November 19, 2009 Permalink | Reply

No, its a very very pale green, which is why it blends in with the skirt so well. The grey one was a darker shade of grey.

They had one left, and it was an L. Grr. But you know what I did chance upon at DSW – those tasty T-strap ruffles. Will debut soon.

    Dilshad Burman – October 14

I had to dress casual-yet-smart for this day at work…

    From Style Per Diem

The jeans: Medium wash, relaxed fit, boot cut jeans with flap pockets. A nice flattering fit I think.

The sweater: I have been looking for sweaters that are NOT V-Necks or turtle necks for a while and for whatever reason they are darned near impossible to find. Naturally, when I found this teal scoop necked wonder, I was overjoyed, not only because it fulfilled the not-V-neck-or-turtle-neck criteria, but because the neck was actually high enough not to necessitate a cami or tank underneath. It has an exaggerated ribbed cuff with buttons down the side of said cuff and a close, but comfortable fit.

The jacket: Previously posted quarter sleeved, single button linen blazer with a portrait collar. I like the structure it adds to an otherwise simple outfit and it seems to lock and load everything when buttoned up. The short length also helps to break up a long, single coloured sweater.

The shoes: My hush puppies will be a constant for the next few posts!

Accessories: I left in the usual silver and added this multi-strand oxidised silver chain for multi-layered fun!

This outfit was simple and comfortable enough to be hassle free, but smart enough to remain poised and confident all day. (Why did that sound like a feminine product commercial?)

V-necks with angled shoulder seems. UGH. Dressing well in winter takes SO bloody much of effort, I just give up. This is a great look. Try with slate/stone colored jeans.

    Dilshad Burman – October 12

I dont remember exactly what I was up to on this day, but I chose to take my chunky over-sized grey sweater coat for another spin…

    From Style Per Diem

The jeans: Extra dark slim fit jeans from one of those teeny-bopper stores because they’re the only one’s that carry double zero’s. Also, apart from my skinny’s these are perfect for tucking into boots.

The top: It looks blue in this picture, but the tank top is actually a nice bright purple, that I layered under a tight black cotton sweater – it was not cold enough for wool yet. I threw on the grey sweater coat, which almost has a kimono like effect and belted it with a thick black faux leather belt. I’m really enjoying the over sized and belted look this season.

The shoes: Reliable, go with everything black hush puppies.

Accessories: Aside from the black belt, nothing notable. My hair looked amazing though!

This outfit was nice for a fall day when they had not quite turned the heat up all the way in the building yet. Warm and cozy, but not uncomfortably stuffy. Someone commented on how I was possibly the only person that still looked miniscule in a thick chunky sweater. I agreed and thanked them.

    October 31 – 2008!!

After a week of 12-14 hour days and little to no sleep, my body finally gave up on me on Halloween itself and I am down with a nasty flu. So, I did not have a chance to dress up and have a costume this year. I was SUPREMELY disappointed because I LOVE Halloween, so I thought I’d share last years costume – I never did get to have enough fun with it, so I might just recycle it for next year…

    From Style Per Diem

The Costume: I dont remember exactly how I came up with this costume, but once I had the idea, I knew exactly how I wanted to put it together. I searched high and low for a tube dress and finally landed up buying 2 brown tank tops, believing one would not be enough to cover everything, and I’d chop up the second one for the lower half. However, thanks to the extra-long tank top trend, one sufficed quite nicely. I went to my regular t-shirt printing store (Yes I have a regular t-shirt printing store!) and had them print ‘Tootsie Roll’ on the tank top in the right font. I then went to my now regular fabric store (back then it wasn’t!) and bought some shiny white trim- its kind of like very broad, thick ribbon.
Now please remember, this is all well before http://www.sewwot.wordpress.com was even a twinkle in my eye.

I proceeded to ruffle up the trim and attached it to the bottom as a frill and the top as a flouncy collar, both front and back. It served as the white paper part on a tootsie roll wrapper. I had some extra left so I made a little wrist band with a bow on it…to add to some sort of 50′s ‘tootsie’ look or something!

Now the red stripes! Thanks to my work I have acces to all sizes, shapes and colours of gaff and electrical tape. So I grabbed a roll of red electrical tape, put on the costume and then taped on red stripes! C’mon, its a costume! It doesn’t have to last beyond the night!

I curled my hair in tight curls, threw on black tights to keep the cold out and if I remember correctly, I wore my red wedges!

And taadaa! TOOTSIE ROLL! Still my most favourite costume ever. I swear I will wear it again next year!

    Dilshad Burman – October 1

The weather was mild and in keeping with my determination to adapt part of my summer wardrobe for fall, I put together this outfit for a work/play day…

NB: Please excuse the quality of the picture. I WISH I had a better one.

    From Style Per Diem

The shorts: Previously posted classic black walking shorts – easy to dress up or down! I layered them with some dark grey wool blend tights for warmth.

The sweater: Although you cannot see it clearly, this cowl neck, short sleeved, exaggerated raglan sweater is a gorgeous GORGEOUS shade of eggplant purple. Its turning out to be my favourite colour this season – as it was last  fall. I have since tried to get a better picture of the sweater but I need daylight, else it looks black!

The boots: My only pair of black boots, my dependable hush puppies. I’m looking in to some grey or slate ones – I wont get tan or brown – no likey. Anyone know where I can get size 5-5.5 shoes??

Accessories: I just have to mention – my hair looked fabulous this day! Um..also, I threw on this lovely thin key hole belt courtesy ET and birthday packages and a red faux snake skin cuff, which, if you could see, is also lovely.

This outfit allowed for much running about and comfy movement and I cant wait to wear it again, now that I have lighter grey tights to break up the look a little more.

    Dilshad Burman – September 30

I am stubbornly determined to carry some of my summer pieces into fall, whether it be as layering, or the main focus. I cant say exactly why…I just don’t think I’m ready to give them up and settle into fall/winter. To this end I put together this simple outfit as basic work wear…

    From Style Per Diem

The jeans: Often worn, OVER worn FAVOURITE bum flattering, ever perfect birthday jeans.

The sweater: I’ve always wanted a nice argyle sweater and when I saw this lovely coral/peach one, I couldn’t resist. As some of you may remember, coral was my FAVOURITE summer colour this year. Generously sweetening the deal was the fact that it was part of a summer sale at H&M, down from $35 to $10. I’m not one to care too much about what’s ‘in season’. I like picking up basic, classic and versatile peices and at $10, who am I to argue anyway!? I have been hoarding it since the beginning of the summer, waiting to wear it – not too impatiently though!

I wanted to wear it with a shirt underneath, but rather than go with a simple collared shirt, I layered it with my birthday ruffled cotton blouse to add some fun and frill to it. The sweater itself was not skin tight and disguised the rest of the ruffles well under it, without being too bumpy or lumpy.

The shoes: It was not too cold this day so I chose to take my black ruffled pumps for a spin.

Accessories: Aside from my silver dragon fly pendant, nothing worth mentioning.

All in all a classic work outfit done in bright, young colours with some flounce for fun!

    Dilshad Burman – September 29

End of September was already getting to be boot time, for me at least, but not quite cold enough for a jacket just yet.

    From Style Per Diem

The jeans: Dark wash skinny jeans perfect to tuck into boots.

The top: I found this lovely coloured zebra top and had to have it because it reminded me of the unicorn on crayon boxes we used to get when I was in kindergarten. I layered it with a thin white long sleeved cotton sweater for warmth.

The sweater coat: Old Navy had a ‘cardi-coat’ sale and I went looking for something to act as a bridge between long sleeves weather and fall jacket weather. I found nothing there but the idea for a chunky sweater coat stuck and I found this lovely grey one at a buy one get one half off sale. I’m liking loose fits in some pieces of late and I dont mind the short sleeves on this coat since aside from ‘sweater weather’, I’d never wear it without a jacket anyway. It has no discernable neck line and falls lazily to about mid thigh and I like the loosey-goosey-ness of it contrasted with the rest of the close fitting outfit. When I had to brave the winds, I buttoned up and threw on a bright pink scarf.

The boots: Last years mid rise Hush Puppies. Such a great investment. Still loving everything about them.

Love love loved this throw on and go look and I lament the passing on that short short week when I could go without a coat.
